¡CALABAZA... No lo haga en secreto ... DIFÚNDELO‼

Partnering With Local Communities: The First Five "Promise Zones"

Today, President Obama will announce five "Promise Zones" -- partnerships with local communities to work to create jobs, increase economic security, expand educational opportunities, increase access to quality, affordable housing and improve public safety.

These five communities -- in San Antonio, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Southeastern Kentucky, and the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma -- have committed to use existing resources on proven strategies, and make new investments that reward hard work. Because as the President noted, in a country as great as this one, a child’s zip code should never determine their opportunity.

Learn more about these Promise Zones -- and tune in today at 2:20 p.m. ET.

Weekly Address: Ensuring 2014 is a Year of Action to Grow the Economy

In this week’s address, President Obama calls 2014 a year of action, which should start with Congress quickly passing emergency unemployment insurance for the 1.3 million Americans who lost this vital lifeline as they fight to find jobs and make ends meet.

Promise Zones: The President announced on Thursday the first five “Promise Zone” locations, an initiative to partners with local communities and businesses to create jobs, expand access to educational opportunities and spur economic mobility.

President Obama was joined in the East Room by students from Harlem Children’s Zone, an educational undertaking that inspired the Promise Zones, where he spoke about the importance of making sure a child’s path isn’t determined by their zip code, but rather by their hard work and determination. In his speech, the President mentioned how he wasn’t so different from one of the students who has benefitted from the Harlem Children’s Zone.

“If you want to know why I care about this stuff so much, it’s because I’m not that different from Roger,” President Obama said.

There was a period of time in my life where I was goofing off. I was raised by a single mom. I didn’t know my dad. The only difference between me and Roger was my environment was more forgiving than his. That’s the only difference. If I screwed up, the consequences weren’t quite as great. So if Roger can make it, and if I can make it, if Kiara can make it, every kid in this country can make it.

The Promise Zones, located in San Antonio, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Southeastern Kentucky, and the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, are the first of 20 being launched over the next three years.

Extending Emergency Unemployment Insurance: On Tuesday, President Obama called on Congress to extend emergency unemployment insurance. Two weeks ago, Congress failed to renew the vital lifeline that temporarily extends insurance for 1.3 million Americans who are currently looking for work. “Now, I’ve heard the argument that says extending unemployment insurance will somehow hurt the unemployed because it zaps their motivation to get a new job,” the President said.

I really want to go at this for a second. That really sells the American people short...I can’t name a time where I met an American who would rather have an unemployment check than the pride of having a job. The long-term unemployed are not lazy. They’re not lacking in motivation. They’re coping with the aftermath of the worst economic crisis in generations.

The President noted that this insurance is not an abstraction but rather a way to provide a bit of extra security, so that losing your job doesn’t mean you lose everything you’ve worked to build.

Affordable Care Act: This week, a new report showed that the growth of health care spending is continuing to slow, and Dr. Biden shared her personal connection to the fight against breast cancer to help highlight a new announcement about no-cost chemoprevention medication for women at high risk of the disease.

Since January 1, Americans across the country who signed up for health coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplaces have new access to quality and affordable health coverage. Read one man’s story as well as stories from 10 others who have received coverage and what it means to them.

We the Geeks: It was a big week for “We the Geeks,” which hosted two Google+ hangouts, one on the future of computing and the other on the polar vortex. Year of action‏

19:56
Para: mateomathaus@hotmail.com

Hey, all --

Over the past few weeks, we've looked back at last year and spent some time planning. And President Obama has a resolution for 2014: that this will be a year of action.

That's going to take more than just talk: It's going to take work from all of us. So if you're standing with the President in 2014, let him know.

I'm In

The President will use every tool he can to create new jobs and opportunities for the middle class. He will be looking for areas of bipartisan cooperation, but he won't be waiting on Congress to act. Instead, the President will use his executive authority, both his pen and his phone, to work with anyone to get things done -- whether they be leaders in business, education, Congress, states, or local communities who want to get things done on behalf of the American people.

Last week, President Obama kicked off this effort when he named five new Promise Zones -- areas across the country where we will partner with local communities and businesses to create jobs and expand opportunity. We'll do this by increasing access to education and quality, affordable housing, and by improving public safety.

And when the President travels to North Carolina this Wednesday, he'll announce a new public-private effort to boost advanced manufacturing that attracts the kind of well-paying jobs that sustain a growing middle class. The next day, he'll host an event on expanding college opportunity at the White House -- where he'll be joined by college presidents and other leaders who are taking concrete action to help more students not only go to but graduate from college with the skills they need to succeed.

These are the kinds of efforts that take the challenges we face head on. We've been through a lot as a nation these last few years -- but more hardworking families need a fair shot at getting ahead.

Those families deserve action -- and the President is going to use every executive tool available to him to make sure they get it this year.

So if you're in, let President Obama know you're standing behind him:

Let's get to work.

A Wide Bandgap What?

Yesterday, President Obama visited Raleigh, NC to talk about making the area a magnet for the good, high-tech manufacturing jobs, as a manufacturing innovation hub.

The hub will develop "wide bandgap semiconductors" -- that use 90% less power than conventional ones, and will make everything from cell phones to electric cars smaller, faster, and cheaper.

Find out what makes wide bandgap semiconductors so cool. (Really.)

As the White House gets ready for Tuesday's State of the Union, it's been a busy week at the White House: The President announced important reforms to the National Security Agency and new measures to prevent sexual assault. He also honored Martin Luther King with a service project at DC Central Kitchen, signed the 2014 appropriations bill into law to fund the government, and hosted a conference of mayors.

Tonight‏....

Tonight, Barack will deliver his fifth State of the Union address.

You might think that this speech was born out of a pile of papers or a long series of meetings. But actually, the real motivations -- and the real substance -- behind tonight's speech come from those quiet moments late at night, when Barack is at his desk reading your letters.

He reads at least 10 a day, from folks all across the country. You write him to say thank you, or to weigh in on a policy issue. You tell him about your families, and what's going on in your lives. And he listens.

These letters turn into real action. I've seen it happen: He'll write in the margins "This is who we're fighting for," and then he'll pass them on to his senior staff.

Take a look at this video -- you'll see what I mean. Then make sure to let him know you'll be watching tonight.

Barack is always up late before big speeches like this one.

And all day today, I know that he'll be making changes to the speech right up until the last hour.

It's not only because he wants to get that final draft just right. It's because he cares deeply about your stories and your hopes and dreams. That's what keeps him going every single day.

We hope you'll be watching:

Thanks,

First Lady Michelle Obama

P.S. -- I'm honored to be watching tonight's speech with some incredible Americans from across the country. Meet them here, and make sure you tune in at 9 p.m. ET.
